德川幕府时代，信州某藩。藩主夫人癫狂而死，临终前将襁褓中的幼子和爱犬托付给心腹侍女阿欣（小村雪子 饰）。三年后，从未与男人接触的阿欣产下一名男婴。藩中一时间议论纷纷，更谣传男婴系阿欣和狗所生，故将男婴命名为斑平。不久，斑平被送往一户普通农家收养。转眼23年过去，斑平（市川雷蔵 饰）已成长为一名俊朗青年。养父去世前嘱托他一定要修得绝世的技能，方能在这磨难重重的世上立足。在此之后，斑平奉召入城担任侍弄花草的工匠，以此为机缘他天生无敌的脚力得到广泛关注，更凭借出众的聪颖习得了剑术大家醍醐弥一郎（内田朝雄 饰）绝学。与此同时，藩中因继承人的问题波澜骤起，善良友善的斑平被迫化身冷血无情的刺客…… 本片根据柴田錬三郎的同名原著改编。。故事是在变化的城市背景下讲述的两位70多岁的纽约人，一个仍然充满愚蠢野心面临着经济危机的老人，讲述他的友情和爱情。。The TARDIS lands in London on Christmas Eve, 1851 and almost immediately the Doctor hears his name being called.
