1937年11月间，日军占领上海后，又攻占杭州、苏州，国家的对外运输线几近封锁。仅存的国际运输通道滇越铁路有随时被日寇炸毁断路的危险。修建一条新的国际运输通道“滇缅公路”成了国家战争物资运输保障的重中之重。 随校迁往大后方昆明的学子王俊荣参加国民政府临时组建的筑路队。经过简单培训，被派往“滇缅公路”怒江两岸雷公山和地母山动员当地百姓修路。 怒江两岸的雷公山和地母山是当地原住民族世世代代赖以生存之地，被他们视为神山。山上有供奉山神的神庙、有宗族祠堂、有世代祖先的坟冢，人们无法接受在“神山”上开凿、爆破，修筑一条与自己无关的路。于是，整寨的寨民开始策划、捉弄筑路员王俊荣，希望他早日离开，将路修在别处。 正当寨民们采取种种手段迫使王俊荣离开他们心目中的“神山”，而王俊荣又异常固执地非要在此筑路的僵持时刻，县民政科送来了阵亡通知书和抚恤金，雷公山寨和地母山...。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
